If you are new to decorating, it may seem a little daunting to find and place pieces that not only reflect you, but make your home pleasing to look at. As I’ve played around with what works and doesn’t work in decor, I’ve put together some “rules” (guidelines, really) that will make your home decor look great.
The Rule of Three But understand, but this rule doesn’t limit you to three, it’s titled this way because it sounds cool. To be entirely accurate, it’s “The Rule of Odds.” As you can see, it doesn’t sound as good. This is something I’ve observed whenever I look at others or my own arrangement of decorations. Typically when you arrange decor, it always looks better when there is an odd number of decorations versus an even number. Symmetry looks nice, but you know, asymmetry is eye appealing. Fill the Wall Space, but Don’t Crowd it Out It’s such a delicate balance. You have to make sure your wall art isn’t cluttering up the wall, but only having one tiny photo on a large wall space looks just as bad. It also needs to be spaced out, but not too far that it looks tacky. Give your Tops Depth and Levels When you’re decorating a table top, top of book shelf, or any other surface, you make it eye appealing. Having everything at a uniform height is boring, so make sure your pieces are different heights (this is what I mean by levels, everything is a different height). Don’t be afraid to bring some of your pieces to the front, this creates depth and more 3D look. Again, it’s eye appealing. Make Sure it Matches When decorating a room, you need a color scheme or theme. It brings uniformity to the room. My Mom has millions of adorable trinkets around her home, and because they all fit in this same color scheme, it looks amazing. Just this one simple change can affect how your entire home looks.
Decorations Should Reflect Who You Are
Pretty obvious, right? It’s like clothing. It reflects who you are. Pick things that show your values and what you enjoy. Have fun with it, because in the end, it’s your home. Less Isn’t Always More, More Isn’t Always More This is a tricky rule. Yea, it's pretty similar to a rule you saw above, but hear me out. Again, it’s all about that balance and what you prefer. I generally go for a more minimalist look, enough to complement and fill the space, but not suffocate the room. Generally, when there’s too much to look at, you end up not looking at it at all. However, like I’ve said about my Mom and all the things she has, she makes it work. Though she has more space to fill than I do as she lives in a larger home. Make sure it has depths and levels and all fits in a theme or color scheme. Symmetry is a Nice Flair But having all your decor be placed symmetrically is boring. Use sparingly. It’s like an exception to a rule. Greenery Adds Life And it doesn’t even have to be a real plant either! For me, I actually don’t have the best of luck with real plants. I end up killing them or they bring in fruit flies into the house. I have a few fake plants placed around the house on different pieces of furniture. Maybe it’s because I like greenery, but it makes home a little more homey.
So there you have it, my tips to decorate your home. Following even a couple of these rules will make your home more eye catching. Don’t be afraid to experiment by moving things around, you may never know what will work for you.

Before we begin, this is the first post of many (probably 5). I will be sharing with you my ideas for my nursery, printables I've created, and finally do a grand reveal of my nursery. If you are interested in following me as I share with you my ideas, please subscribe at the top of the page. You'll also receive updates on other projects I've been working on and other printables I've created.
This is first of my Superhero Nursery set I completed. What I love most about this project is that it’s completely my own. I designed the printable, painted the block, podged it on. It’s a simple project, but my own “brain child”. Up until I made this project, many of the crafts I made were ideas from other amazing people. I will be sharing the links where I found these printables. It’s only fair, because they deserve the credit. But back to this project. I need to go back a few months for you to understand the background to the set I’ve created. It all started when my husband and I found out I was pregnant. We were so excited because this is our first. One day, I was in Gordman’s looking around for holiday decorations. It was there I found these:
And I fell in love with them. Not only is it fun, but there’s a strong moral message on them which I appreciated. From then on, I really wanted a boy. Luckily, a few months later, we found out that we were having a boy. Of course, I would have loved to have a girl, but nothing seemed to stand out to me for girl nursery themes the way this one did.
And of course, after Gordman’s, I went to the best place ever, Pinterest. I found many ideas for more printables and decorations ideas. If you are interested, here is the link to my Pinterest board, Superhero Nursery. Here you can see what I liked, didn't like, what generate the ideas I've come up with for my decor. So, back to Pinterest. When I looked up ideas for my decor, they either weren’t exactly what I wanted, weren’t available to print, or weren’t free. But hey, I have Canva! Why don’t I just design the printables I wanted? I would make one and then another idea would present itself and I’d design another one. And so on. This is the first I created for the room. One thing that was lacking was the presentation of my religion in this theme. I am a member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints, and it is a huge part of my life. Of course, I want it to be part of my decorations. Decorations should present you and your values. One common phrase you see in Latter-Day Saint homes is, “I am a Child of God.” It’s one of our most basic beliefs that every child learns growing up. Obviously, perfect choice for a first project. When I looked at pins of different rooms, you’ll notice that they feature all the different superheroes and not just a single one. So that’s what you’ll see in my room (at a future time). This features Captain America. From there, it was pretty easy; get a block, paint it red, podge the printable on the block. The block wasn’t the size I wanted, but it was the only one I could find at a price I liked. So I went ahead and painted it with a different color to make it more visually interesting and ta-da! The first craft for my baby room is done! If you love it, I am providing this printable for free! And if you don’t love Captain America, this file comes with other options like Superman, Batman, Wonder Woman, and others. Click the link below to download it: Click here to download the file for these printables.
Note: these are only a few of the printables in the file. And remember, these are for personal use only.
