My Story
Growing up, I never thought I would be much of a crafter. The reason why is because I have an amazing sister whose crafts always looked better than mine. Problem was, I was constantly doing things I wasn't good at or enjoyed. When it comes to hand drawn art, I make amazing stick figurines. Basically, I would only craft if I had to.
I started making scrapbooks online when I was in college. Understand, this blog isn't about scrapbooking, but it's how I got into what I do now. I enjoyed having the freedom to make changes on the page. Sometimes making small changes, to even redoing the entire page. Up until my second year of marriage, this is all my crafting would be.
I've always enjoyed arranging and decorating my room; making it look nice. When I was little, my parents bought a mini Christmas tree for each room, with its own set of garland and ornaments, for us to decorate in our room. I loved going to decor stores like Tai Pan or Michael's and looking at all the fun things you can put in your home. But I think what really got me into crafting home decor was when I was called to be a leader in our Young Women's group.
(Before we continue: I am a member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints. I love the church and it has been a HUGE part of my life, which you'll see in my crafting. Our church as different organizations for most age groups, Relief Society (adult women), Elders Quorum (adult men), Young Woman (adolescent girls), etc. Most members actively participate in these groups in various positions through "callings" or what I just termed as assignments. We don't get paid for the work we do, but we love doing it anyways.)
If you don't know anything about Young Women's, we do a lot of crafting. As a leader, sometimes I would have to come up with and bring supplies for the project we were doing. I would also have to create/provide decorations for a formal activity we were holding (I have a blog post about that). This is when I found my niche in crafting. Little did I know that I created a monster.
A few months after I was "released" from the calling, I started crafting for myself. I generally craft for what I need in my home. What did I need at the time? Holiday decorations. It was September and I was not in love with the holiday decorations I had, or didn't have enough to fill my home with holiday cheer. Originally, I purchased decor from some of my favorite shops, but after a while, I found that I was limited in options and money. That's when I found printables on Pinterest. From there, I found out how to create my own designs and make things that fit my budget.
After a few projects, I found crafting was a way for me to relax. I had a sense of accomplishment in making something for my home that looked really nice. It made me happy. My husband started to notice how happy I was and became a big supporter. Soon, he encouraged me to share photos of what I've made on Facebook with friends. I received lots of positive feedback and even hosted a successful craft party.
From there, I decided to create a blog. Share my thought process, what I've done differently with projects I found online, and share my own designs. My home has benefited so much from free printables and I feel that it wouldn't be right if I didn't give back. This is why I give so many away for free.
